How to Open the Fuel Tank Cap of Mitsubishi Outlander?

First, use the key to unlock the trunk and open it. Check the location of the fuel tank cap. If it is on the right side, there is a decorative cover on the right side of the trunk. Use a tool to open the decorative cover, and you will see a red emergency release device. Pull the emergency release device to open the fuel tank cap. For most cars, the fuel tank cap release cable and the mechanism to pop open the fuel tank cap are separate. In this case, you can first hold the fuel tank cap switch and then pull the fuel tank opening.
My old Outlander has been running for over eight years, and I remember the fuel tank cap switch clearly. After sitting in the driver's seat, move your left leg toward the door, and between the floor and the door frame, you'll find a small black plastic lever with a fuel tank icon printed on it. Don't rush; locate it and pull firmly until you hear a click, which means the fuel tank cap is unlocked. Then, step out to the rear wheel area, press the edge of the cap, and it will pop open for refueling. This design is quite clever—it includes an in-car release mechanism for theft prevention and ensures convenience and safety during refueling. Newcomers might fumble at the gas station initially, but practicing a few times beforehand makes it easy. Remember to unlock the car door first; otherwise, the lever might get stuck. After refueling, tighten the cap to prevent poor sealing, which could affect the fuel system and potentially trigger a warning light over time. Also, avoid driving with an empty fuel tank too often, as it's not good for the fuel pump.
