If the rocker arm is in contact with the cam, rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees, at which point the valves are in the closed position. 3. Loosen the lock nut (2) of the adjustment screw (1). Use a screwdriver to turn the adjustment screw so that the gap (A) between the lower end of the screw and the upper end of the valve stem (3) reaches the specified clearance value, as determined by the thickness of a feeler gauge. Keep the screwdriver steady and tighten the lock nut to the specified torque. Then, recheck the gap (A) with the feeler gauge. This completes the adjustment of the intake and exhaust valve clearances for the first cylinder. 4. Then, rotate the crankshaft clockwise (viewed from the front of the engine). For a 4-cylinder engine, every 180 degrees of rotation allows adjustment of the valve clearance for the next firing cylinder in the firing order (1-3-4-2). For a 3-cylinder engine, every 240 degrees of rotation allows adjustment in the firing order (1-2-3). The angle of crankshaft rotation can be calculated using the number of teeth on the flywheel ring gear.
