How to Fix a Volkswagen Tiguan Tailgate That Won't Open?

4 Lift the rear seat upwards to release the hooks from the steel plate, performing the same operation on both sides. Then, fold down the rear seat. Find a suitably sized binder clip to clamp onto the hook of the S-shaped connecting rod. If the clip is large enough, it will extend a few millimeters, which is sufficient. Once clamped, it becomes very sturdy, and the trunk will open with a gentle pull.
Last time my Tiguan's tailgate also got stuck, experience tells me the common causes are weak key battery, door lock mechanism failure, or sensor malfunction. Try replacing with a new battery first - if the key indicator light doesn't come on, that's likely the issue. Alternatively, locate the manual release lever behind the rear seats from inside the car, one pull should open it. Also check the fuses - the tailgate circuit fuse is in the fuse box, replace if blown. Humid weather causes rust, spray some WD40 for lubrication. If still not working, the wiring harness may have aged - visit a professional repair shop for diagnostic equipment checks. Never force it open as it damages the vehicle and is dangerous. Regular maintenance should include cleaning the locking mechanism to prevent incidents.
