How to Emergency Release the Gear on Jaguar XJL?

Jaguar gear release is divided into two situations: If the Jaguar encounters a situation where the P gear cannot be released: Open the right cover of the Jaguar electronic gear, remove the base cover, and you will see a red pull tab. Lift the red pull tab up, and you will see a keyhole. Insert the mechanical key into the keyhole and turn it to open the switch. After opening, pull the red cover again, and the gear will be released to the "N" gear. Turning it back to the P position will change it to the "P" gear. Jaguar release requires special tools: Unplug the connector of the electronic parking brake module, connect the wiring harness (two connectors) with special tools, and press the button of the professional tool to release.
Once when I was driving to the suburbs, my Jaguar XJL suddenly broke down halfway, with the gear stuck in P and unable to move. There's actually an emergency release method for this situation. Near the center console, on the side of the gear shift lever, you can find a small square cover plate. Use a thin, hard object like a key to gently pry open the cover by pressing on its edge. Inside, there's a button; press it firmly, and after hearing a click, the gear lever should move freely. Remember, the entire process must be done with the vehicle completely turned off and the handbrake firmly engaged to prevent the car from rolling and causing injury or damaging the transmission. If pressing the button doesn't work, it might be a component failure, and you should call for roadside assistance to tow the car to a professional repair shop to check the gear shift mechanism wiring. It's a good idea to keep a small pry tool in the glove box for emergencies.
If the Jaguar XJL's gear is locked due to a dead battery or electrical circuit failure, don't force the gear lever! Observe the base of the gear shift lever from the driver's seat, where an emergency gear release port is usually hidden. First, park the car, turn off the engine, and secure the wheels, then pry open the plastic cover. Use a pen cap or coin to press the internal metal button, and while keeping it pressed, you can shift the gear to Neutral (N). This allows the car to be pushed or towed, avoiding the embarrassment of blocking the road. After the operation, remember to contact a repair station immediately, as this is only a temporary measure. If it's a sensor or control module issue, a comprehensive inspection is still necessary.
The emergency gear release primarily relies on a mechanical button. The Jaguar XJL's gear shift base has a hidden mechanism; after lifting the protective cover, press the yellow release button, similar to designs in other luxury cars. Apply moderate force to avoid damaging the internal clips. After releasing the gear, although the vehicle can move, the electronic power steering may fail, making the steering wheel very heavy. It is recommended to operate on flat ground and keep the moving speed below 8 km/h to avoid damaging the drivetrain. This method is suitable for short-distance vehicle movement; for driving to a repair shop, it's better to call a tow truck.
