Disassembly tutorial for the Kia K5 center console: Use a trim removal tool to pry open the frame below the original car navigation, remove the frame, unscrew the fixing screws on both sides of the original car navigation, then remove the screws inside the middle of the original car navigation. After all screws are removed, take out the original car navigation and unplug the wiring behind it. The Kia K5 is a mid-size car launched by Dongfeng Yueda Kia Motors, with body dimensions of 4845mm in length, 1830mm in width, and 1460mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2795mm. In terms of power, this car offers two powertrain options, equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine and a 1.6T turbocharged engine respectively.

I've disassembled the K5's center console twice myself. First, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent short circuits. Start with the triangular trim panels on both sides of the dashboard, using a plastic pry tool to gently pry along the seams—there are clips underneath, so don't force it. Next, remove the air vent panel, which has hidden T20 screws that need to be unscrewed. Then, tackle the main infotainment screen—its frame has double-sided tape that requires a heat gun to soften before slowly peeling it off. Remember to organize all removed parts in order and take photos of wire harness connectors for reference; otherwise, reassembly will be confusing. It's best to prepare some new clips as backups, as older car plastic parts tend to break. The whole process takes about two hours. Beginners are advised to follow along with tutorial videos.

Last week, I helped a friend dismantle the center console of his old K5 and discovered some tricks. First, having the right tools is essential: plastic pry tools, a T-shaped screwdriver set, and a heat gun are all indispensable. Start with the silver trim around the gear shift, using the pry tool to wedge in from the shift panel area. Be aware that there are two screws hidden beneath the air conditioning control panel—forcing it off without removing them can damage the clips. When removing the head unit, proceed slowly as it’s connected to the GPS antenna and USB cable at the back. I noticed that the bracket structure of the K5’s head unit changed after 2015, making removal and installation more challenging. Wear cotton gloves throughout the process to avoid leaving fingerprints on the piano black finish. It’s best to work during daylight with good lighting, as poor visibility at night can lead to snapped clips due to unclear positioning.

Removing the center console requires proper technique. When I first took apart my K5, I broke three clips. The correct steps are: 1. Remove the steering wheel lower cover; 2. Pry open the dashboard side panel; 3. Start removing the full-length trim from the passenger side. The key is applying smart force - stop when you hear a click. There are 6 clips hidden behind the metal trim, use a flathead screwdriver to press the center for release. When replacing the head unit, note that the original wiring harness may be too short - you'll need extension cables, and ensure correct wire sequence. After removal, remember to clean dust from air ducts and add soundproofing foam for immediate effect.
