How to Disassemble a Car Folding Key?
2 Answers
Open the folding part of the key, insert a flathead screwdriver into the horizontal groove. Make sure to press firmly and then use a skillful twist of the screwdriver. When a larger gap is pried open, hold onto the keyring below and pull hard. The key will then separate into upper and lower parts. Forcefully pry open the side, and this part of the key will split into front and back pieces, revealing the battery and circuit board sections. Remove the battery for replacement. After replacing the battery, reassemble in the reverse order. Generally, only the key battery needs to be replaced. If the key gets wet, the internal circuit needs to be disassembled and dried. Be careful not to touch the circuit board.
Last time I took apart a folding key, I noticed there are often tiny screws hidden on the back that require precision screwdrivers to carefully remove. Some models use simple snap-fit designs instead—I prefer using plastic pry tools to gently open them from the gaps, avoiding metal tools to prevent scratching the casing. Once opened, you'll see the battery and circuit board inside; note down the battery model for easy replacement later, and make sure not to install the new battery backward to avoid short circuits. When reassembling, align the snap-fits properly and press evenly to ensure the folding mechanism moves smoothly. This process tests your patience—I once accidentally broke a plastic hook and had to order a replacement shell online to fix it. I recommend working on a clean table with a small container handy to prevent losing tiny parts. If the remote stops working after disassembly, it might be due to loose circuitry, requiring professional adjustment at a repair shop. Safety first—never force it open recklessly. After a few tries, it becomes as easy as a simple DIY project.
