How to Determine the Condition of a Compressor?

To determine whether an air conditioning compressor is functioning properly, follow these steps: 1. First, learn to identify the three terminals on the compressor, labeled S, R, and C. S stands for the start winding, R for the run winding, and C for the common terminal. 2. Next, use a multimeter to measure the resistance between these terminals. The sum of the resistances between SC and RC should equal the resistance between RS, which indicates normal operation. For example, if the resistance between RC is 5 ohms and between SC is 3.5 ohms, then the resistance between RS should be 8.5 ohms (minor deviations are acceptable, but significant differences are not). If the resistances deviate too much or there is no resistance between any of the terminals, the compressor is likely damaged.
