Check for musty odors inside the car. Water-damaged vehicles often have musty smells in hidden areas such as floor mats, trunk liners, and under the seats. Look for rust or disassembly marks. Inspect seat tracks for rust or mud/water stains, and check for watermarks or dirt at the ends. Press buttons or turn knobs. If most buttons and knobs feel sticky or have rebound resistance, it's due to sediment in the gaps affecting their movement after water exposure. Check for rust and metal shavings. Examine various connectors for mud deposits, and also inspect the vehicle's headlights for accumulated water or condensation.
