How to Determine if the Car is in the Middle During an S-Turn?

Subject 2 S-turn is a mandatory test item. To determine if the vehicle is in the middle during an S-turn, observe the angle between the A-pillar and the lower edge of the windshield. If this angle aligns with the left edge of the S-turn, maintain this alignment by steering accordingly, ensuring the vehicle stays in the center of the lane. The method for navigating an S-turn in Subject 2 is as follows: 1. Drive to the right: As the vehicle approaches the curve driving test area and the in-car voice prompt begins, position the vehicle at the entrance of the curve, adjusting it to the center of the road. Try to keep the outer front wheel close to the right edge of the curve. 2. Turn left: Once the vehicle enters the curve area, drive along the right side. When the left corner of the car aligns with the right edge line, turn the steering wheel one full turn to the left while making minor adjustments. Monitor the distance between the wheel and the curve edge via the right rearview mirror. 3. Turn right: As the left corner of the car gradually completes the right edge line of the left turn, keep the steering wheel steady. When the right vertex of the car hood touches the left edge line of the right turn, straighten the steering wheel and proceed slowly. 4. Continue turning right: When the left 1/3 of the car hood meets the left edge line of the right turn, turn the steering wheel one full turn to the right while making minor adjustments. Ensure the right corner of the car aligns with the left edge line of the right turn, following the S-curve to the right without crossing or leaving the line. 5. Exiting the curve: Do not rush to straighten the wheel. Many drivers hastily straighten the wheel after completing the right turn, resulting in crossing the left curve line. At this point, be cautious and slightly straighten the wheel first, then fully straighten it once the car is aligned.
After driving for so many years, I've found that judging the middle of an S-curve mainly relies on visual habits and practice. Before entering the curve, reduce speed to a comfortable level, focus your eyes on the farthest point of the curve—like aiming at the center of the road hundreds of meters ahead—and let the steering wheel follow your vision naturally to keep the car centered. I use the A-pillar of the windshield as a reference point, aligning it with the lane markings—when the left A-pillar and the right side of the car evenly wrap within the lines, it confirms the correct position. Practice S-turns on empty roads repeatedly, gradually increasing speed to develop a feel; keep steering smooth and avoid sudden twists. Always check the rearview mirror to ensure the car stays parallel and doesn’t cross lines. With enough practice, this becomes intuitive, making driving safer and more confident. On consecutive curves, especially remember to straighten the wheel slightly after one curve before entering the next to minimize swaying risks.
