How to Deal with Water in a Motorcycle Engine?
2 Answers
If water enters a motorcycle, it is necessary to check which part has been affected and promptly clean the waterlogged components. Water in the engine can cause the motorcycle to stall and fail to start. It is essential to thoroughly remove all the water; otherwise, it may affect the motorcycle's service life.
That day my engine stalled right after driving through water, so I quickly turned off the ignition and pushed it to the roadside shade. Whatever you do, don't try to restart it, or you'll hydrolock the pistons and ruin the engine! Remove the spark plugs and crank the engine with the kickstarter to eject water from the cylinders. After draining, use a hairdryer to dry everything for half an hour before reinstalling the spark plugs - make sure to wipe the electrodes dry. You must change the oil immediately too. Last time I skipped this step and ended up with rusty bearings making awful noises. In this kind of weather, it's best to carry a basic tool kit when going out, so you can perform emergency repairs if water gets in.
