How to Connect the Wiring for the Rearview Camera Light?

The wiring method for the rearview camera light is as follows: the red wire should be connected to the rear taillight, while the black ground wire can either be left unconnected or inserted into an empty slot in the rear taillight connector. The installation steps for the rearview camera are: 1. Install the rearview mirror with a dash cam; 2. Route the wiring; 3. Install the camera near the rear license plate; 4. Connect the camera wiring harness to the dash cam. The purpose of the rearview camera is to display an image that informs the driver of surrounding obstacles, helping to eliminate blind spots and unclear visibility, thereby improving driving safety. The rearview camera serves as a safety aid for parking and reversing, allowing the driver to see the area behind the vehicle on the display and avoid accidents caused by unawareness of rear conditions while reversing.
Last time I installed a reversing camera on my old Jetta, I did the wiring myself. The power cable for the reversing camera light needs to be connected to the positive wire of the reversing light, so it only gets power when the reverse gear is engaged. After removing the rear tail light assembly, locate the reversing light wire harness. Many cars have color-coded wires—for example, Volkswagen often uses gray or black-and-white wires. I recommend buying a car circuit tester from Taobao to confirm which wire lights up only when reverse gear is engaged. Connect the positive power wire to the reversing light's positive wire, and the negative wire can be grounded to a body screw. The camera's power needs to be tapped into this location. Route the video cable from the rear of the car along the door edge weather stripping all the way to the head unit. The most critical part is to properly wrap the wires with insulating tape, especially where they pass through metal body sections—use corrugated tubing here. I initially didn’t do this well, which later caused screen flickering. Finally, plug the yellow RCA connector into the AV input on the head unit, and you’re done. Just remember to route the wiring away from the exhaust pipe area, as the high temperatures can melt the cables.
