How to Clean a Motorcycle Air Filter?

Loosen the screws on the air filter housing cover and remove the cover. Loosen the filter element retaining hook, take out the filter element and support frame, and separate the two. Pour gasoline or cleaning agent into a cleaning basin. Immerse the filter element in the cleaning solution and gently knead it to remove dust and debris, then squeeze out the cleaning agent from the filter element with your palm. Drip a small amount of clean engine oil onto the cleaned filter element and squeeze it evenly by hand to remove excess oil. Finally, wipe the air filter housing clean.
To clean a motorcycle air filter, as someone who frequently works on vehicles, I recommend the first step is to turn off the engine, remove the cover, and take out the filter element. If it's a paper type, avoid water—use compressed air to blow out dust from the inside. For foam types, soak in warm water with mild soap for 10 minutes, then gently scrub and rinse. The key is to let it dry completely for at least 24 hours—avoid using heat sources to prevent deformation. Check the filter for cracks or damage; replace it if found, as reusing a damaged filter may cause air leaks and harm the engine. Before reassembly, wipe any dirt inside the housing and align the sealing ring. Cleaning it every 3,000–5,000 km can boost performance and save fuel. Neglecting this leads to dust buildup and accelerated engine wear—I’ve repaired too many bikes with such issues. Wear gloves for safety; the process is simple but requires attention to detail.
