How to Clean a Motorcycle Air Filter?
2 Answers
Unscrew the bolts on the motorcycle air filter cover. Remove the filter sponge inside the air filter and wipe away dust and dirt with a cloth. After cleaning, place the filter sponge back into the air filter. Apply a small amount of engine oil to the surface of the sponge during installation to enhance dust absorption. Reattach the bolts to the air filter to complete the cleaning process.
I've been riding motorcycles for several years, and cleaning the air filter is a routine task, just like regular maintenance. If you don't clean it often, the filter gets clogged, preventing dirt from entering the engine, and the bike will feel sluggish with higher fuel consumption. First, turn off the engine for safety. The filter is usually located under or on the side of the fuel tank—just loosen the screws to remove it. Most washable foam filters can be cleaned by blowing off dust with compressed air. If it's very dirty, soak it in warm water with mild detergent and gently scrub with a soft brush. After cleaning, make sure it’s completely dry—leave it in the sun or use a hairdryer on the cool setting to avoid rust or mold from leftover moisture. Before reinstalling, check the sealing ring for any damage. I typically clean mine every 2,000 kilometers, or more often in dusty conditions. It’s not a difficult task, and making it a habit can extend your bike’s lifespan. Though a small process, it greatly protects performance—don’t skip it!
