How to Clean a Clogged Exhaust Pipe?

Exhaust pipes are not designed to be cleaned; if severely clogged, they should be replaced directly. A clogged exhaust pipe can lead to symptoms such as sluggish acceleration, frequent forced downshifting in automatic transmissions, slight backfiring when the engine is suddenly accelerated, and abnormal noises from the exhaust pipe. The symptoms of a clogged exhaust pipe are as follows: 1. Sluggish Acceleration: If during a long drive, the engine idle becomes unstable, acceleration feels weak, or the car seems to struggle, it may be due to a clogged exhaust pipe causing poor exhaust flow, which reduces air intake and decreases engine power. 2. Frequent Forced Downshifting in Automatic Transmissions: When a clogged exhaust pipe reduces engine power, the driver may press the accelerator harder to speed up, causing the throttle to open wide. In this case, the car will control the automatic transmission to force a downshift based on the throttle's state. 3. Slight Backfiring When the Engine is Suddenly Accelerated: A clogged exhaust pipe can trap some exhaust gases in the cylinders, making the air-fuel mixture leaner and slowing combustion. When the intake valve opens, the mixture may still be burning, causing it to backfire into the intake pipe through the open valve. 4. Abnormal Noises from the Exhaust Pipe: If a "clattering" sound is heard from the exhaust pipe during sudden acceleration or deceleration, it indicates a damaged catalytic converter, which can easily lead to a clogged exhaust pipe.
I've encountered a clogged exhaust pipe several times, and cleaning it is actually quite simple. First, prepare a long-handled brush and a dedicated exhaust pipe cleaner. Start the car and drive it for about half an hour to warm it up, which will soften the carbon deposits inside. When the car has cooled down to a warm temperature, spray the cleaner inside and let it soak for 20 minutes. Then, use a high-pressure water gun to rinse from the tailpipe inward. If the blockage is only at the pipe opening, you can simply use an iron wire hook to remove things like fallen leaves. A special reminder: avoid using hard objects to scrape the catalytic converter section, as it can easily be damaged. For regular maintenance, remember to use high-quality gasoline and occasionally rev the engine on the highway to reduce carbon buildup.
