The method for cleaning a car throttle body is as follows: 1. Turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery; 2. Remove the throttle cable, intake hose, and the screws securing the throttle body in sequence; 3. Clean the throttle body with a cleaning agent, and use a cotton swab to wipe areas that are hard to reach. The throttle body is a controllable valve that regulates the air entering the engine. After the air enters the intake manifold, it mixes with gasoline to form a combustible mixture, which then burns to perform work. The effects of a dirty throttle body include: 1. Engine shaking during idle; 2. Insufficient power during driving; 3. Increased fuel consumption; 4. Increased likelihood of engine stalling; 5. Failure to meet emission standards.

Cleaning the throttle body can actually be done by yourself. Just prepare a bottle of throttle body cleaner and a soft-bristled brush. First, park the car in a well-ventilated area and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent the ECU from reporting false errors. Remove the intake pipe to expose the throttle body. Cover the lower intake port with a wet wipe to block dust, then spray the cleaner generously inside and outside the throttle body, especially around the edges of the circular valve plate where oil sludge tends to accumulate. Wait for 3-5 minutes to let the cleaner dissolve the grime, then gently wipe away the black deposits with a soft cloth—never use a steel brush as it can scratch the coating. After reassembly, remember to reconnect the battery to allow the ECU to relearn the throttle position, otherwise the idle may shake severely. Cleaning it every 20,000 kilometers is great for the car, and you'll notice significantly more responsive throttle.

Last time when cleaning the throttle body, I discovered a trick: First remove the air filter box to expose the intake pipe, then loosen the clamp to detach the intake pipe. Since the throttle body is positioned deep and hard to reach, you can use your phone's flashlight to take photos and check carbon buildup. Focus on cleaning the metal valve plate's pivot area, where carbon deposits most easily cause sticking. After spraying cleaner, gently scrub with a toothbrush, then wipe clean with lint-free paper towels. When reinstalling, remember to apply some high-temperature resistant grease on the throttle plate shaft for smoother rotation. The effect is most noticeable after driving on the highway post-cleaning—the engine sound becomes noticeably lighter and more responsive.

I prefer to completely remove the throttle body for thorough cleaning. Unplug the connector, unscrew the four mounting screws, and remove it along with the idle air control valve. Soak the throttle plate with dedicated cleaner for five minutes, then use cotton swabs to clean the idle air control valve passages. Apply a thin layer of anti-rust oil during reassembly and perform throttle position relearn. Cleaning interval depends on driving conditions – for city driving with frequent traffic jams, it's recommended to clean every 15,000 km. Long-term neglect of carbon buildup can cause unstable cold idle and poor acceleration with sluggish RPM response.
