How to Check the Tire Pressure Monitoring in RAV4?

RAV4's tire pressure monitoring is not an active monitoring function. It only automatically displays information on the dashboard when there is an abnormality in the tires. The display does not show specific values but only indicates which tire has an issue. Tire Pressure Monitoring: Tire pressure monitoring involves real-time automatic monitoring of tire pressure during vehicle operation, alerting the driver to tire leaks or low pressure to ensure driving safety. Direct Tire Pressure Monitoring: Direct tire pressure monitoring devices use pressure sensors installed in each tire to directly measure tire pressure. The pressure information is transmitted wirelessly from inside the tire to a central receiver module, which then displays the data for each tire's pressure. The system automatically alerts when tire pressure is too low or there is a leak. Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring: When the pressure in a tire decreases, the vehicle's weight causes the rolling radius of that wheel to become smaller, resulting in a faster rotation speed compared to other wheels. By comparing the differences in rotation speeds between tires, the system monitors tire pressure. Indirect tire pressure monitoring systems essentially rely on calculating the rolling radius of tires to monitor pressure. Introduction to Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS): It combines the advantages of both systems mentioned above, equipping direct sensors in two diagonally opposite tires and incorporating a 4-wheel indirect system. Compared to using only a direct system, this hybrid system can reduce costs and overcome the limitation of indirect systems, which cannot detect simultaneous low pressure in multiple tires. However, it still cannot provide real-time data on the actual pressure in all four tires as a direct system does.
When I first started driving the RAV4, I researched how to check the tire pressure monitoring system, and it's actually quite intuitive. While driving, there's a steering wheel button on the left side of the steering wheel—press it a few times to switch the dashboard display to the tire pressure page. The dashboard will list the pressure values for each tire, such as the left front, right front, etc. If the pressure is too low or too high, the system automatically activates a yellow warning light and beeps to alert you. Make sure to check it when the car is parked, as the system doesn’t display real-time pressure values while driving for safety reasons—it only alerts you. It’s best to check when the tires are cold, like before setting off in the morning. By the way, incorrect tire pressure is dangerous—it increases tire noise and fuel consumption. Make sure to manually verify the actual tire pressure at least once a month, keeping it between 30-35 PSI. If the warning light comes on, don’t delay—take your car to a professional shop immediately to inspect the tires.
I think the RAV4's tire pressure monitoring system is quite user-friendly. After starting the car, simply check the dashboard display, usually by toggling views with the steering wheel controls. Some model years also have an option in the settings menu, labeled 'Vehicle Information' or similar. The warning light becomes very conspicuous when pressure is abnormal - never ignore it. When I experienced low pressure myself, the monitoring system alerted me in time, preventing a potential blowout. Make it a habit to check tires and pressure during every maintenance. Remember, underinflation causes uneven edge wear while overinflation affects braking distance - refer to the label on the door jamb for proper values. Paying attention to this detail ensures safer driving and extends tire lifespan.
