How to align the timing on a Toyota RAV4?

Rotate the engine crankshaft to position the No. 1 cylinder piston at top dead center and secure it. Align the red timing mark on the camshaft gear with the timing mark on the chain and secure it. Install the crankshaft drive sprocket. Ensure the three timing marks on the timing chain correspond with the two timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and the one timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket.
I've previously worked on the timing system of a Toyota RAV4 myself, and I believe the first step is to disconnect the battery's negative terminal for safety. After removing the front engine cover, locate the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft—for Toyota, these are usually aligned with notches on the flywheel or gears, and should be secured with special tools to prevent movement. Align everything step by step, and when installing the new timing belt, ensure it's tensioned properly—not too loose or too tight. After installation, manually turn the engine over twice to test for any resistance. Remember to ensure the engine is cold before starting, and have all necessary tools like a torque wrench and sockets ready. A mistake here could lead to valve collision with the piston, potentially destroying the engine. I've done this several times myself, and taking photos of the alignment marks is very helpful to prevent misalignment during reassembly. Regularly check the belt for noise or cracks while driving, and replace it early to prevent issues.
