Timing alignment refers to adjusting the working angles of the intake camshaft (controls intake valves), exhaust camshaft (controls exhaust valves), and crankshaft (controls piston height in the cylinders). Camshaft alignment method: Open the valve cover, and you'll find a straight slot at the rear of each camshaft. Align both shafts horizontally and insert the special tool. Crankshaft alignment method: There is a hexagonal bolt to the right of the oil filter. Remove it and insert a thick screwdriver. Slowly rotate the crankshaft to locate the fixing hole (the fixing hole is on the crank - feel carefully as there are several holes on the crank, with the fixing hole being deeper while others are balance holes). Once found, the crankshaft should not rotate left or right. Normally, a special tool is used for this procedure.

Aligning the timing on the Chery Arrizo 5 is quite crucial. I've done it myself a few times before. The key is to use specialized tools to accurately locate the marking points on the crankshaft and camshaft—for example, rotating the engine to align the marks, then loosening the tensioner to install the new belt or chain. You have to be careful not to let the marks shift during the process, or the engine could suffer serious issues. Essential tools include wrenches and torque wrenches, and I recommend working in a well-lit area to avoid mistakes. The Arrizo 5’s 1.5L engine primarily uses a chain, and regular inspections can extend its lifespan. I usually check it every 80,000 kilometers to prevent skipped teeth from damaging the valves. If you lack experience, it’s best to consult the manual or watch instructional videos first to avoid costly repair mistakes.

Aligning the timing on the Chery Arrizo 5 is a major preventive task for me. Not addressing it promptly can lead to internal engine collisions, doubling the repair costs. I usually start by locating the marks on the crankshaft flywheel, matching them with the gear points on the camshaft. After alignment, adjust the tensioner tightness—the chain or belt installation should be neither too loose nor too tight, or it will wear out too quickly. Remember to disconnect the power throughout the operation for safety, and don’t rush to start the engine midway. Beginners might consider doing this at a 4S shop, where they have complete equipment and thorough checks to avoid rework. Adding this item to regular maintenance can save a lot of hassle.

To align the timing, I usually start by rotating the crankshaft to locate the positioning hole, then adjust the camshaft gear marks to align. After that, install the new chain, set the tensioner to a moderate position, and finally manually turn the engine two full rotations to check for accuracy before starting the car. Remember to wear gloves throughout the process to avoid scratches.
