Check through the spark plug holes, and use a manual wrench or socket to rotate the crankshaft pulley fixing bolt (the crankshaft can only be rotated in the normal rotation direction of the engine crankshaft). Use manual tools to gently rotate the intake and exhaust camshafts. Position the intake and exhaust cams of the cylinder at the position where both the intake and exhaust valves are fully closed. Then tightly insert the No. 1 special tool from the rear plane of the cylinder head into the timing slots of the intake and exhaust camshafts. Additionally, there is a bolt hole for installing an M6 bolt on the crankshaft pulley. When fixing, the crankshaft pulley should be vertically downward and aligned with the bolt hole on the timing cover.

The timing chain replacement must follow the procedure step by step, and a full set of tools is essential. Prepare the camshaft positioning pin and crankshaft positioning pin. First, locate the positioning hole on the camshaft and the top dead center mark of the first cylinder on the crankshaft. Once the engine is rotated into position, insert the special pins to secure it. Removing the old chain and installing the new one requires extra care—ensure the colored links on the chain align precisely with the crankshaft sprocket mark, intake camshaft mark, and exhaust camshaft mark, with no room for error. During installation, guide the chain along the track into the sprocket grooves, and don’t forget to install the hydraulic tensioner. Manually rotate the crankshaft two full turns to confirm the chain doesn’t skip teeth or produce abnormal noises. It’s best to have two people working together for this process. Use a torque wrench to tighten bolts according to the manual for reliability. Finally, double-check everything before the test run to ensure peace of mind.

From my experience, it's easy to make mistakes when aligning the marks during actual operation, so it's best to do some homework in advance. Look up the Boyue-specific repair manual online and confirm the positioning hole locations against the engine model. Some 1.8T engines have the intake camshaft positioning hole at the end, and the crankshaft needs to be fixed with a flywheel disc pin. During replacement, it's recommended to take photos throughout to record the original position of the chain. After aligning the marks, use your phone to zoom in and check if they match perfectly. Before installing the tensioner, manually press to release it first, then reinstall it. Don't rush to cover the housing after installation; rotate the crankshaft clockwise two turns to see if the camshaft marks return to their original positions. If you're inexperienced, it's advisable to spend some money to have a professional guide you. If this job is messed up, the engine will need a major overhaul.

For beginners replacing the chain, prepare these steps: First, disconnect the battery negative terminal, remove the air filter box and engine cover. Second, loosen the timing cover screws to expose the sprocket set. Third, rotate the crankshaft to locate the top dead center mark of cylinder one. Fourth, find the positioning hole on the camshaft end face and insert the pin to secure it. Fifth, when installing the new chain, ensure the colored chain links align with the sprocket dot marks. Sixth, before installing the hydraulic tensioner, press down the push rod to release it. Finally, manually rotate the crankshaft to ensure no jamming, then reassemble. Remember, using original chain components is the safest option.
