How to Adjust a Motorcycle Chain That is Loose in Some Sections and Tight in Others?

First, check the condition of the chain for any damage; if damaged, it is recommended to replace it. Pre-tension the chain, adjust its tightness, and then fully secure it. It is advisable to maintain the motorcycle chain's tightness between 15mm and 20mm by adjusting it timely. Regularly inspect the cushion bearing and apply grease as scheduled.
When my motorcycle chain is loose in some sections and tight in others, I first find a flat spot to park and put up the stand. Then I check the sag at different points of the chain, pressing the middle section by hand to test the tension. If one side is loose while the other is tight, it’s likely due to uneven chain wear or a misaligned rear axle. I loosen the rear axle nut, adjust the tensioner screws on both sides, and gently rotate the wheel to test for evenness. Once the sag is consistent, I tighten the nut to the specified torque. Regular chain lubrication can prevent this issue—check it every few hundred kilometers to avoid mid-ride problems affecting handling. A chain that’s too loose or tight can damage both the chain and sprockets, leading to more costly and troublesome repairs.
