How Often Should Genuine Mercedes Spark Plugs Be Replaced?

Genuine Mercedes spark plugs typically need to be replaced every 20,000 kilometers. Main types of spark plugs include: standard spark plugs, extended insulator spark plugs, electrode-type spark plugs, seat-type spark plugs, pole-type spark plugs, and surface-gap spark plugs. Spark plug replacement intervals: Under normal maintenance conditions, replacement is recommended after 40,000 to 60,000 kilometers of driving. However, this may vary depending on the brand and engine type. It is advisable to follow the user manual. Maintenance replacement can be based on the following standards: platinum spark plugs at 40,000 kilometers, ordinary nickel alloy spark plugs at 20,000 kilometers, and iridium spark plugs at 60,000-80,000 kilometers. Working principle of spark plugs: Under high voltage, the air between the center electrode and side electrode of a spark plug rapidly ionizes, forming positively charged ions and negatively charged free electrons. When the voltage between electrodes reaches a certain level, the number of ions and electrons in the gas increases like an avalanche, causing the air to lose its insulating properties and forming a discharge channel - a "breakdown" phenomenon occurs. At this point, the gas becomes a luminous body, creating a "spark." Accompanied by thermal expansion, a "snapping" sound is also produced. This electric spark can reach temperatures as high as 2,000-3,000°C, sufficient to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.
