Motorcycle throttle bodies should be cleaned every 20,000 to 40,000 kilometers. Fuel-saving tips for motorcycles: Start gently and release the clutch slowly; shift gears in a timely manner—neither too early nor too late, always referring to the tachometer for shifting; excessively high throttle or low engine RPM will lead to higher fuel consumption; regularly check tire pressure, as proper tire pressure ensures normal fuel consumption. The function of the throttle body: The throttle body is a controllable valve that regulates air intake into the engine. After entering the intake pipe, the air mixes with gasoline to form a combustible mixture, which then burns to generate power.

I've been riding motorcycles for over a decade, and there's no fixed rule for throttle body cleaning. The manual usually recommends cleaning every 20,000 kilometers, but it really depends on your riding environment. For me, since I often ride through construction sites with heavy dust, I need to remove and spray it with throttle body cleaner every six months. The easiest way to tell is by checking if the idle is stable—when the engine shudders during cold starts or the tachometer fluctuates, it means carbon deposits are blocking the bypass air passage. The disassembly and cleaning process isn't actually difficult, but remember to remove the entire throttle body assembly for cleaning. Don't spray cleaner directly while it's mounted on the bike, as the cleaner can corrode the sensors.

When I first started riding motorcycles, an experienced rider told me a trick: use your finger to feel the edge of the throttle plate. If you detect a gritty, sandpaper-like texture or the plate moves stiffly, it's time for a cleaning. If you ride frequently in the city, ask the mechanic to check the inside of the intake tube during oil changes. I make it a habit to peek inside the air filter box every 5,000 kilometers—if you spot sludge buildup in the intake tube, address it immediately. The real killer for throttle bodies is low-quality gasoline; its resin deposits can harden into a crust, requiring a copper brush to scrape off.

Last year, I had a profound experience driving on National Highway 318. The fuel quality at high-altitude gas stations is inconsistent, and I noticed throttle sticking after just 300 kilometers. Now I've developed a habit: before any long-distance ride, I always bring throttle body cleaner—it's even more essential than a tire pump. A special reminder: after cleaning, you must perform throttle body adaptation. For older EFI models, you need to disconnect the battery's negative terminal to reset the ECU. For newer models, you can simply press the accelerator pedal twice during the key-on self-test.
