China's automobile industry is divided into 3 stages. Initial Stage: This was the founding period of China's automobile industry, during which modern automobile enterprises like FAW were established, achieving a breakthrough from zero in automobile production and laying the foundation. Before 1966, the automobile industry had a total investment of 1.1 billion yuan, forming five automobile manufacturing plants (one major and four small ones), with an annual production capacity of nearly 60,000 vehicles and nine vehicle models. Growth Stage: From the construction of the Second Automobile Works (SAW) to the early 1980s of reform and opening-up, this was the growth stage of China's automobile industry. Unlike FAW, which was built with Soviet assistance, SAW was a large automobile manufacturing plant entirely constructed by China's own efforts. Through independent capabilities, China formed an automobile industry layout primarily focused on "truck production." Rapid Development Stage: During this stage, China's automobile industry, especially the passenger car sector, significantly accelerated its technological progress, with new models emerging continuously. Technological advancements accelerated, with substantial improvements in vehicle technology, especially in environmental indicators. Cooperation with foreign automobile giants in production and marketing noticeably quickened, and the introduction of foreign capital, technology, and management deepened continuously. Positive results were achieved in independent innovation. The adjustment of enterprise organizational structures progressed steadily, forming a complete automobile industrial system.
