How Many Points Can Be Reduced Through Traffic Law Study?

Traffic law study can reduce up to 6 points. Drivers who participate in online study (accumulating 30 minutes within 3 days) and pass the exam can have 1 point deducted. Participating in on-site study (no less than 1 hour each time) and passing the exam can reduce 2 points. Engaging in traffic safety public welfare activities (1 hour each time) can reduce 1 point. There is no limit to the number of times one can participate in traffic law study, but once a driver has reduced 6 points within a scoring cycle, they can no longer participate. Traffic law study is a measure for licensed drivers who have been penalized for traffic violations. By participating in online traffic safety study and passing the exam, they can have points deducted. This is a convenience measure uniformly deployed by the Traffic Management Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security. According to Article 5 of the Notice on the "Work Standards for Reducing Road Traffic Violation Points Through Traffic Safety Education (Trial)" issued by the Ministry of Public Security on January 14, 2020 (Gongjiao Guan [2020] No. 14), motor vehicle drivers applying to reduce traffic violation points through traffic safety education must participate in corresponding road traffic safety laws, regulations, and related knowledge study, exams, or public welfare activities based on their highest permitted vehicle type and meet relevant requirements to apply for point reduction. Purpose: Traffic law study reduces existing points on a driver's license rather than adding points or replacing penalty points. The points obtained through free study clear existing penalty records. For example, if a driver is penalized 6 points, passing the traffic law study exam can clear these 6 points, allowing a fresh start. Regulations: The number of points that can be deducted after traffic law study depends on how many points the driver had before participating, but the total accumulated points cannot exceed 11. Regardless of participation in traffic law study, a driver's license only has 12 points. Traffic law study only reduces existing points and does not increase the total to 18 points. Specific considerations are as follows: Eligible Participants: Motor vehicle drivers holding a People's Republic of China driver's license, regardless of the permitted vehicle type or whether they are commercial vehicle drivers, can participate in traffic law study and must engage in corresponding road traffic safety laws, regulations, and related knowledge study and exams based on their highest permitted vehicle type. Specific Rules: Motor vehicle drivers participating in online road traffic laws, regulations, and related content study must study continuously for 5 minutes each time, accumulate 30 minutes within 3 days, and then register for an exam within 7 days. Passing the exam reduces 1 point. Drivers can also participate in on-site study, with each session lasting no less than 1 hour. After completing the required study hours, they can apply for an exam, and passing reduces 2 points. Drivers can also participate in offline safety public welfare activities, with each hour-long session reducing 1 point. Accumulating 30 minutes of study within 3 days, with each session lasting no less than 5 minutes and passing the exam, reduces 1 point. Cases Not Accepted: The following situations will not be accepted: The driver had two or more full-point records in the previous scoring cycle. Within a 3-point cycle, the driver was involved in hit-and-run accidents, drunk driving, or the manufacture or alteration of documents or license plates. The driver's license is in the probation period or has not been reviewed on time. The driver has unresolved traffic violation records. The driver has a vehicle with overdue safety technical inspections or unregistered deregistration. The driver has already reduced the maximum of 6 points within the cycle.
