How Many Chances Are There for the Subject 4 Driving Test?

According to the "Regulations on the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driving Licenses," there is no limit on the number of attempts for Subject 4. If the first test on the day is not passed, an immediate retake is allowed. If the retake is still unsuccessful, a new appointment must be scheduled, and no additional fees are required for retakes. However, it is important to note that the validity period of the driving skill admission certificate is three years. If the applicant fails to complete all tests within this period, the passed subject results will become invalid. Subject 4 consists of 50 questions, primarily in the form of case studies, images, and animations, with a full score of 100 and a passing score of 90. Subject 4, also known as the theoretical test or driver theory test, is part of the motor vehicle driving license assessment. After the implementation of the Ministry of Public Security's Order No. 123, Subject 3 was divided into two parts: the road test and the safety and civilization knowledge test, commonly referred to as "Subject 4," which evaluates "driving ethics." Subject 4 is the colloquial term for the safety and civilized driving knowledge test under Subject 3 and is not a separate subject. Since this test is conducted after Subject 3, it is commonly called Subject 4. Officially, there is no Subject 4. The safety and civilized driving knowledge test is conducted after Subject 3. Subject 4 Test Notes: Test Duration: The test lasts 30 minutes, and incorrectly answering 12 points (6 questions) will terminate the test. Number of Questions: Depending on the type of license, 50 questions are proportionally selected from the Subject 4 question bank. For car licenses, questions are drawn from 800, while for large vehicle licenses, they are drawn from 1,023, with each question worth 2 points. Question Types: The test includes single-choice questions (including true/false questions) and multiple-choice questions. The first 45 questions are single-choice, and the last 5 are multiple-choice. The test also includes animation questions, image questions, scenario recognition questions, and text-based questions. Retake Notes: If Subject 4 is not passed, only Subject 4 needs to be retaken. The driving school will schedule the retake, and there is no limit on the number of retakes. Retakes for Subject 4 do not require additional fees. Subject 4 Test Tips: Strengthen Weak Areas and Identify Mistakes: For marked questions, do not just memorize the correct answers. Instead, refer to regulations, textbooks, or reference materials to understand the reasons for errors and internalize them. Categorize and Summarize Questions: Refer to the question bank analysis to group similar questions. Many questions in the bank are similar and easily confused, so they should be analyzed together. For example, traffic signs for walking, pedestrian crossings, and pedestrian warnings are visually similar and can be confusing. Grouping them during study helps avoid mistakes. Use Mnemonics: Many questions involve numbers. Summarizing these numbers can make them easier to remember. The driving test consists of three subjects: Subject 1, Subject 2, and Subject 3, with Subject 3 divided into two parts. Subject 1 covers laws, regulations, and related knowledge on road traffic safety; Subject 2 assesses field driving skills; and Subject 3 evaluates road driving skills and safety and civilized driving knowledge.
When I was taking the Subject 4 test, I also wondered how many times I could take it. Later, I found out that the opportunities are actually unlimited—as long as it's within the three-year validity period after passing Subject 1, you can take it as many times as needed. After each failure, you have to wait ten days before reapplying. I once saw a friend pass on his fourth attempt—he would review the question bank and use an app to simulate the test multiple times each time. The key is not to delay too long, because the entire driver's license exam cycle is only three years. If it expires, you have to restart from Subject 1. So, I recommend passing it in one go if possible, and thorough review of traffic safety knowledge is the most important.
