How Long is the Shelf Life of Motor Oil After Opening?

Opened motor oil has a shelf life of approximately one year. To prevent the opened motor oil from deteriorating, proper storage methods should be followed: 1. The storage environment for the oil bottle must be clean and dry, ensuring no exposure to sunlight to prevent oxidation reactions in the oil. 2. After opening, the motor oil must be sealed immediately. After completing car maintenance, a clean plastic film should be placed over the bottle opening, and the cap should be tightly screwed on. 3. When adding the remaining oil from the previous maintenance, do not pour all of it into the engine; retain a portion. This is because prolonged storage can lead to trace amounts of water at the bottom of the oil bottle, which, if added to the engine, could have adverse effects and impact engine performance.
A few years ago, I learned this lesson the hard way. I opened a new bottle of engine oil, used half of it, and left the remaining half in the garage, forgetting about it. After more than half a year, when I used it again, the oil had become thick and black. After pouring it in, the engine ran hot and made knocking noises. At the repair shop, the mechanic told me the oil had gone bad due to improper sealing. Now I understand—once opened, engine oil really doesn’t last long, generally about 6 months to a year. The sooner you use it, the better. If you must store it, keep it in a cool place away from sunlight, seal the bottle mouth with plastic wrap before capping it to prevent moisture and dust from getting in. Hot weather is especially risky, as the oil can oxidize, clump, and degrade. I used to be too lazy to note the date, but now I’ve learned—I stick a small label on the bottle with the opening date. If it’s been over a year, don’t hesitate to throw it away. Bad oil can damage the engine, and repairs will cost far more than a few hundred bucks. For long-term storage, switching to a sealed plastic container might be more reliable. In short, don’t risk big trouble just to save a little money.
