How Long Can a License Plate Be Retained?
1 Answers
If the original license plate has been used for more than one year and the vehicle owner has owned the original vehicle for more than three years, they can apply to retain the original license plate within six months after completing the transfer or deregistration process (these six months include weekends). The original license plate can be retained when the vehicle is transferred, deregistered, or relocated, or when purchasing a new or used vehicle. Before retaining the license plate, ensure all traffic violations and accident-related matters have been resolved. Important Notes Regarding License Plates: If a vehicle owner plans to sell their vehicle, the license plate can be retained for up to one year. However, the buyer of the vehicle cannot continue using the previous owner's old license plate. If the old license plate is no longer needed, it must be surrendered. If unused for one year, it will be recycled into the number resource pool. The vehicle management office may periodically release these numbers when the available pool is insufficient. An online selection system "20-50 Choose 1" has been introduced, fully implementing internet-based pre-selection of license plate numbers. Vehicle owners can select their preferred license plate numbers via the Traffic Safety Comprehensive Service Management Platform website or the mobile app "Traffic Management 12123." Owners can choose between random selection or self-composed selection based on their preferences. The random selection option has been expanded from 10 to 20 choices. In areas with abundant license plate number resources, the selection range may be increased to 30-50 options.
