How Long Can a Driving License Be Expired at Most?

1、Validity Period: According to Article 57 of the 'Regulations on the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driving Licenses': Motor vehicle drivers should apply for a license renewal at the vehicle management office where the license was issued or at another office outside the issuing location within 90 days before the expiration of the motor vehicle driving license. If the license has been expired for less than 12 months, the renewal can be processed as usual. 2、Overdue: If the renewal period is exceeded by less than one year, the driving license is in an overdue and unrenewed state. The driver can go through the renewal procedure at the vehicle management office by presenting their ID card, expired driving license, and a medical certificate issued by a county-level or military medical institution at or above the regimental level. No additional subject tests are required to renew the license.
Having driven for over a decade, I place great importance on the vehicle license. It serves as the ID card for your car, and you cannot drive even a single day after its expiration. If you're caught by traffic police driving with an expired license, you'll immediately lose 3 points and be fined 200 yuan. I learned this the hard way when I thought being a few days overdue wouldn't matter but still got penalized. My advice is to start preparing for the annual inspection three months before expiration, as passing the inspection is required to obtain a new license. If it does expire, promptly visit the vehicle management office for a replacement—don't delay beyond a month, or you'll have to undergo reinspection. If left overdue for too long, exceeding three inspection cycles, the vehicle will be forcibly scrapped, and that would be a huge loss.
