Tianjin's license plate restriction policy for out-of-town vehicles: On workdays (excluding Saturdays and Sundays that are adjusted to workdays due to statutory holiday shifts), from 7:00 to 9:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 daily, the restricted area is within the Outer Ring Road (excluding the Outer Ring Road itself). The following motor vehicles are not affected by the restriction measures: 1. Four types of special vehicles: police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and engineering rescue vehicles; 2. Funeral vehicles from funeral parlors; 3. Large and medium-sized buses (including public buses, shuttle buses, long-distance buses, etc.), taxis (excluding rental vehicles), and postal service vehicles (with passes issued by the traffic management department of the public security bureau); 4. Sanitation, landscaping, and road maintenance vehicles; 5. New energy vehicles with special new energy license plates and new energy vehicles with license plates issued by the city.
A while ago, I drove to Tianjin for a business trip. The traffic restriction rules for out-of-town license plates in Tianjin are basically the same as those for local vehicles, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and pollution. During weekdays, there are restrictions during the morning and evening rush hours, roughly from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, but the exact times should be checked against official announcements. Out-of-town vehicles must also comply with the tail number restrictions, such as restrictions on vehicles with license plate numbers ending in 1 and 6 on Monday, 2 and 7 on Tuesday, and so on in rotation. Do not drive during those restricted times. If caught violating the rules, you may face a fine of 200 yuan and possible demerit points. I recommend checking the restriction calendar on a mobile app in advance to avoid peak hours. Additionally, the restricted areas are mainly within the outer ring road of the city center, and out-of-town vehicles driving inside are likely to be fined. It’s best to park outside the ring and switch to the subway or public transport for peace of mind. Always check your license plate’s tail number before daily trips to avoid unnecessary travel.
