Does the timing chain need to be replaced?

Timing chains do require replacement. They should be changed every 80,000 to 100,000 kilometers. As mileage increases, wear occurs on the chain. Additionally, since the guide rails are made of plastic, prolonged use can also lead to wear. In some vehicles, the timing chain guides may even break during operation. The timing chain is a crucial component of an engine, primarily responsible for driving the valve train mechanism. It ensures the engine's intake and exhaust valves open and close at the proper times, allowing cylinders to breathe normally. In certain vehicle models, such as Volkswagen's Jetta EFI, Bora, Sagitar, Audi, and Santana, the timing belt also drives the water pump.
