The three-way catalytic converter does affect fuel consumption. Its primary function is to influence vehicle emissions. Lower emissions indicate more complete gasoline combustion, leading to better fuel efficiency. Conversely, if the catalytic converter fails, emissions increase, gasoline cannot burn or be utilized efficiently, and fuel consumption naturally rises. Methods to determine the condition of the three-way catalytic converter: Visual inspection. Examine the exterior of the catalytic converter for any damage or discoloration. Scratches, cracks, or other external marks may indicate prior damage. If there are noticeable gray spots on the protective cover, severe discoloration, or purple marks on the casing, the catalytic converter may have suffered from overheating issues. Check the engine exhaust. Place your hand near the tailpipe outlet to feel the exhaust flow and assess whether the catalytic converter is clogged or if there are exhaust flow issues. Another method is to open the air filter, remove the filter element, and observe if exhaust gases flow backward during rapid acceleration, indicating poor exhaust flow. To evaluate the TWC's condition, also inspect the secondary air injection pump for faults. Use an infrared thermometer.
