Does the third-generation EA888 consume engine oil?

The third-generation EA888 engine no longer has the issue of excessive oil consumption. While some oil consumption is normal, excessive consumption leads to the problem of burning oil. The following factors can exacerbate oil consumption and lead to burning oil: 1. Carbon deposits in the combustion chamber can cause the piston rings to stick, leading to poor sealing. 2. Sludge formation in the lubrication system can block the oil return holes of the oil control rings, reducing their oil-scraping efficiency. 3. Wear between the pistons and cylinder walls. 4. Corrosion or aging of the valve seals, resulting in loss of sealing performance. 5. Modern vehicles are equipped with a crankcase ventilation system (PCV valve), and if it malfunctions, it can also increase oil consumption.
I've driven quite a few cars equipped with the third-generation EA888 engine, like the Volkswagen Magotan or Audi A4. Overall, this generation has shown significant improvement over the previous two in terms of oil consumption issues, mainly due to optimized piston ring design and oil-gas separator. However, a small number of owners have reported higher-than-normal oil consumption, especially during prolonged high-load driving or in high-temperature environments. A friend of mine experienced this – the oil warning light came on during highway driving, and upon checking, the oil level was slightly low. Maintenance is key: always use 0W-30 or manufacturer-specified oil, check the dipstick every 5,000 kilometers yourself, and avoid prolonged high-RPM operation. Regular maintenance can prevent issues. If you notice blue smoke from the exhaust or frequent warning lights, it's advisable to have the PCV system checked by a professional. Generally speaking, this isn't a widespread problem, but good habits will keep headaches at bay.
