Does the steering gear need to be replaced if there is play?

A play of no more than five degrees is normal, but if it exceeds this, it should be replaced at a 4S shop. If not replaced, the play will gradually increase, and the noise will also become louder. Here are the reasons for play in the steering gear: 1. It may be due to wear of the internal gear rack in the steering gear, causing excessive clearance in the gear rack, which makes the steering wheel feel loose. 2. It may be due to wear of the universal joint inside the steering column connected to the steering wheel, leading to excessive play in the steering wheel. 3. It may be due to wear of the clock spring (spiral cable) under the steering wheel, resulting in excessive play in the steering wheel.
