Does the steering gear need to be replaced if there is play?

If the play in the steering gear does not exceed five degrees, it is normal. If it exceeds this, you should go to a 4S shop for replacement. If not replaced, the play will become increasingly larger, and the noise will also grow louder. Effects of steering gear play: 1. Wear on the steering gear's rack and pinion and wear on the suspension's connecting components create significant gaps, requiring the steering wheel to turn a larger angle to make the vehicle turn; 2. Excessive steering wheel play reduces the vehicle's handling and makes it feel somewhat unstable when driving. Causes of steering gear play: 1. Wear on the internal rack and pinion of the steering gear, leading to excessive clearance; 2. Wear on the universal joint inside the steering column connected to the steering wheel; 3. Wear on the clock spring (spiral cable) beneath the steering wheel.
