Does the Qashqai use a timing belt?

The Qashqai does not use a timing belt. The original vehicle is equipped with a chain timing system. Taking the 2021 Qashqai as an example, its body dimensions are: length 4401mm, width 1837mm, height 1593mm, wheelbase 2646mm, and fuel tank capacity 57L. The 2021 Qashqai has a MacPherson independent front suspension and a multi-link independent rear suspension. It is powered by a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine with a maximum horsepower of 151PS, maximum torque of 194Nm, and maximum power of 111kW, paired with a 7-speed continuously variable transmission.
The Qashqai uses a timing chain instead of a belt. Having driven my Qashqai for five years, I’m well aware of its engine design. The difference between a chain and a belt is significant—the chain is like a metal motorcycle chain, which basically lasts a lifetime without needing replacement, whereas a belt must be replaced at scheduled intervals. This makes the Qashqai particularly worry-free, unlike my friend’s old Accord, which required a ¥2,000+ belt replacement at 80,000 kilometers. Although the chain makes a metallic rattling noise during cold starts, it disappears once the engine warms up. For routine maintenance, just remember to change the engine oil regularly—oil lubrication is crucial for the chain’s longevity.
