Does the Oxygen Sensor Need Regular Replacement?

Oxygen sensors do not require regular replacement. If the oxygen sensor is functioning properly, there is no need to replace it. Under normal circumstances, an oxygen sensor can last up to 100,000 kilometers without issues. 'Normal circumstances' refer to the owner regularly maintaining the vehicle and avoiding aggressive driving behaviors. Typically, there are two oxygen sensors: one is the front oxygen sensor, and the other is the rear oxygen sensor. The front oxygen sensor is located before the catalytic converter and is used to adjust the mixture concentration. The rear oxygen sensor is positioned after the catalytic converter and monitors the working condition of the catalytic converter. The oxygen sensor is a critical feedback sensor in the fuel injection engine control system. Its function is to detect the oxygen concentration in the exhaust and send feedback signals to the ECU. The ECU then adjusts the fuel injector's fuel supply, keeping the air-fuel ratio of the mixture near the theoretical value.
Oxygen sensors don't require a deliberate replacement schedule, but based on my experience, regular inspections are essential. A few years ago, my old car's fuel consumption suddenly skyrocketed. When I took it to the repair shop, they found the oxygen sensor was faulty—since it monitors oxygen in the exhaust to help the engine adjust the fuel ratio, any malfunction leads to increased fuel consumption. I spent 500 yuan to replace it, and the improvement was immediate. Generally, these sensors last around 100,000 to 150,000 kilometers, but blindly replacing them regardless of the car model is a waste of money. I recommend having a technician check for error codes with a diagnostic tool during each maintenance service. If the engine light comes on or you notice reduced power, it's time to take action. Regular maintenance of the air filter and fuel system can also extend the sensor's lifespan. With newer cars featuring advanced technology and improved durability, smooth driving habits are usually sufficient.
