Generally, the drive shaft does not require additional lubrication. There is a dust cover on the outside of the drive shaft, which is prone to damage after high mileage. Once damaged, the oil inside will leak out, so it should be replaced promptly. Usually, new covers are lubricated when installed. Function of the automotive cross shaft: The automotive cross shaft is used to transmit power at varying angles, serving as the 'joint' component in the universal drive system of a vehicle's drivetrain, where changes in the direction of the drive axis are needed. Reducing wear: There is rapid relative sliding between the piston and cylinder, as well as between the main shaft and bearing bush. To prevent excessive wear on the parts, an oil film must be established between the two sliding surfaces. A sufficiently thick oil film separates the surfaces of the relatively sliding parts, thereby reducing wear.

I've been repairing cars for over 20 years. The steering universal joint is mostly sealed in design. For cars like the Elantra, the manufacturer didn't include a grease fitting from the factory. If you experience heavy steering or unusual noises, it's likely due to part wear or looseness - don't hastily add grease. Using the wrong lubricant or over-greasing can damage the seals, allowing dust ingress and accelerating wear. Since the steering system affects safety, any issues should prompt immediate inspection of suspension and power steering components at a repair shop. I've seen many car owners attempt DIY fixes, only to waste money on unnecessary part replacements later. The most cost-effective approach is to monitor steering feel during routine maintenance and address minor issues promptly.

Having driven for half a lifetime, I've also owned a Lantra. The universal joint is generally maintenance-free, and adding lubricant is unnecessary. If the steering isn't smooth, don't tinker with it yourself—it might be a loose ball joint or worn rack. Mixing grease with impurities can actually make things worse, and repairs will cost you more. Regular vehicle inspections can prevent problems before they occur, ensuring peace of mind and safety.

My Elantra has been running for several years, and the steering wheel universal joint is well sealed. The manufacturer says no additional lubrication is needed. Adding too much grease can cause leaks or attract dirt, which may damage the steering system and cost more to repair. If the steering feels heavy, check the power steering system instead of making unnecessary adjustments.
