Does the Emgrand GL have a particulate filter?

Emgrand GL is equipped with a particulate filter. All Geely vehicles with turbocharged engines come with particulate filters. Principle of the particulate filter: The diesel particulate filter is coated with metals such as platinum, rhodium, and palladium. The black smoke containing carbon particles emitted by the diesel engine enters the exhaust particulate trap through a dedicated pipeline. After passing through its densely arranged bag-type filter, the carbon particles are adsorbed on a filter made of metal fiber felt. When the amount of adsorbed particles reaches a certain level, the burner at the end automatically ignites and burns, converting the adsorbed carbon particles into harmless carbon dioxide that is then expelled. Function of the particulate filter: The particulate filter can reduce the soot produced by diesel engines by more than 90%, and the captured particulate emissions are subsequently burned off during vehicle operation.
As a long-time owner of the Emgrand GL, I've driven both the 2019 and 2022 models. The China V compliant 2019 version indeed didn't come with a particulate filter, but all China VI-b models released after 2021 are equipped with this device. You can spot it as that bulge in the middle section of the exhaust pipe. This component mainly captures carbon particles from exhaust emissions, but prolonged city driving can trigger blockage warnings. Just last week, I performed a high-speed regeneration by revving the engine, and the dashboard warning light went off. The newer models have relocated the GPF behind the engine for faster heating, making it less prone to clogging.
After studying Geely's technical manual, it was found that the Emgrand GL has different emission standards. The China 5 version uses a traditional three-way catalytic converter, but after upgrading to China 6b (mainly the facelifted models after 2021), all variants are equipped with a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF). It is located in the middle section of the exhaust pipe and looks like a metal can. Modern cars come with an active regeneration function: when blockage is detected, the system automatically increases fuel injection to raise the temperature and burn off the carbon deposits. However, owners who frequently drive short distances are advised to take a monthly highway trip to prevent clogging. Modifying the exhaust system can affect sensor accuracy, and a friend at the dealership warned that it might trigger fault codes.
After comparing models in the same price range, like the Emgrand GL, it's clear that most China 6b-compliant versions of 100,000-yuan family sedans come standard with a particulate filter. Here's a practical tip: check the vehicle conformity certificate in the glove compartment and search for the terms 'GPF' or 'particulate filter' to confirm. The regeneration strategy in newer models is quite smart, triggering passive regeneration during aggressive throttle inputs in daily driving. Most group members who experienced clogging were those with short commutes of only 3-5 km per day. They resolved the issue by developing a habit of revving to 3,000 rpm for a few minutes after warming up the car. For long-term blockages, a service regeneration at the dealership is necessary, but the disassembly and cleaning process can be quite troublesome.
