Does the 2022 New Passat Have a Particulate Filter?

The 2022 new Passat is equipped with a particulate filter. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a ceramic filter installed in the exhaust system of diesel engines, which captures particulate emissions before they enter the atmosphere. Its function is to filter out tiny particles in the exhaust gas. When a certain amount of particles accumulates, it automatically burns the captured particles, thereby achieving a cyclic operation. The diesel particulate filter can effectively reduce the emission of particulate matter. It first captures the particulate matter in the exhaust gas and then oxidizes the captured particles to regenerate the particulate filter. The so-called filter regeneration refers to the fact that during the long-term operation of the DPF, the gradual increase of particles in the filter will cause an increase in engine backpressure, leading to a decline in engine performance. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly remove the deposited particles to restore the filtering performance of the DPF. A clogged particulate filter will reduce vehicle power. Some vehicle models, if detecting a clogged particulate filter, will automatically reduce the power output of the diesel engine. At the same time, the high exhaust resistance will also weaken the vehicle's power performance.
When I first got my 2022 Passat, I specifically checked this issue. The new models all come equipped with a particulate filter, hidden near the rear exhaust pipe. This is standard for new cars now, a configuration forced by the China VI emission standards. It mainly traps those tiny carbon particles in the exhaust. But I must warn you, if you frequently crawl in city traffic, it's prone to clogging. When clogged, the dashboard warning light comes on, fuel consumption spikes, and the car loses power. To prevent this, I make a point to take a monthly highway drive to rev the engine and clear it out. Also, try to refuel at reputable gas stations—low-quality fuel can shorten its lifespan.
I've been running an auto repair shop for over five years, and every new Passat I've handled comes with a particulate filter. Volkswagen engineers told me it's a standard feature to meet China's Stage 6 emission standards, installed on both 1.4T and 2.0T engines. The thing needs to reach over 300°C to work properly, which is hard to achieve in stop-and-go city driving. Just the day before yesterday, a car owner came in for inspection, complaining about his fuel consumption suddenly jumping from 8 liters to 12 liters. Turned out the filter was clogged. The solution isn't complicated: either go to the dealership for a regeneration procedure or drive on the highway for half an hour yourself. The key is using the right engine oil—you must choose low-ash 0W-20.
