Does Driving in L Gear Damage the Car?
1 Answers
Whether driving in L gear damages the car depends on the situation. Driving in L gear with the engine at low RPM does not harm the car; however, using L gear at high RPM can cause some damage to the engine. L gear is a low-speed gear, and shifting into this position allows the car to use engine braking when going downhill, so the driver doesn't have to press the brake pedal for extended periods. L gear can also be selected when climbing steep slopes, as it restricts the vehicle to low gear operation, preventing frequent gear shifts, which helps the car climb more powerfully and also protects the transmission. Generally, automatic transmission cars have six gear positions, arranged from top to bottom as follows: P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral), D (Drive), S (Sport mode), and L (Low gear).
