Does Coasting in Neutral Save Fuel in a Manual Transmission?
1 Answers
Coasting in neutral with a manual transmission does not save fuel. Reasons why coasting in neutral does not save fuel: Many modern vehicles are equipped with electronic fuel injection systems. When the car is shifted into neutral, the ECU defaults to assuming the car is idling, thereby increasing fuel injection to maintain idle speed. The electronic fuel injection control system inherently has fuel reduction or cutoff capabilities. Coasting in neutral not only negates this function but also increases fuel injection. Hazards of coasting in neutral: Coasting in neutral can cause engine knocking, where the force of fuel combustion cannot fully perform work, impacting the connecting rod mechanism and leading to premature wear. Additionally, due to insufficient low-speed torque, acceleration becomes sluggish, potentially increasing fuel consumption.
