Does a car consume more power when locked or unlocked?

Parking without locking the car will consume power, but the amount of power consumed is minimal. Even when the vehicle is locked, it still consumes power to maintain anti-theft functions and the battery's daily usage. Reasons for power consumption: After the car is turned off, the power supply is not completely disconnected. Devices such as the anti-theft alarm and warning lights continue to operate. Additionally, many sensors in the car are powered by the battery. If the car is not locked, it will not enter sleep mode, causing more sensors to remain active and consume more power. Precautions: Before turning off the engine, always ensure all electrical devices such as headlights, air conditioning, reading lights, and windows are turned off. This is because the alternator stops generating electricity once the engine is off, and using these devices afterward will overload the battery. Always make sure the doors are properly closed when locking the car, as failing to do so will increase power consumption. In severe cases, the battery could be completely drained overnight.
After years of driving, I've learned that a car consumes less power when locked because it enters a sleep mode. Once locked, the anti-theft system and electronic modules automatically switch to low-power operation, such as sensors working intermittently rather than continuously monitoring, significantly reducing current consumption. When unlocked, the system remains in a vigilant state, including remote key detection and active internal sensors, which invisibly increases power consumption. Once, I forgot to lock my car during a business trip, and after a week, I found the battery completely drained. The mechanic said it was because the system remained fully active due to not being locked. With modern cars having more and more electronic components, developing the habit of locking the car immediately after exiting can effectively avoid such issues, protecting the battery's lifespan and saving money and hassle. Remember to check if the doors are properly closed in time to prevent accidental drainage.
