Temporary license plates do not need to be surrendered when the official license plates arrive. Temporary plates have an expiration date and will automatically become invalid upon expiry, with no requirement for return. Temporary License Plates: Temporary license plates are valid for 15 days within the city and one month outside the city. Additionally, new vehicles cannot use temporary plates for more than 15 days. Temporary license plates are issued by the vehicle management department of the public security authority when a vehicle has not yet been officially registered due to pending formalities. Regulations on Official License Plates: The "Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China" clearly stipulates that vehicles must display license plates as required when driven on roads, and failure to do so will result in penalties. However, before obtaining official license plates, it is mandatory to apply for temporary vehicle license plates in accordance with regulations to legally drive on roads. New vehicles must not use temporary plates for more than 15 days, and owners should promptly apply for official license plates from the vehicle management authority.
