Can You Use Reverse Gear for Push-Starting a Manual Transmission Car?

Manual transmission cars can be push-started in reverse gear. While it's generally easier to use second gear for push-starting, using reverse gear is also possible, though more challenging. This is due to insufficient RPM, poor visibility, and higher safety risks. Push-starting is the most familiar and effective emergency starting method, but it should only be used as a last resort, as it can cause some damage to the engine and clutch. Automatic transmission vehicles should especially avoid this method. Push-starting usually requires at least two people, making it difficult for a single driver to execute. Before push-starting, check if the road conditions where the vehicle is parked are suitable. Utilizing a downhill slope can help increase speed. If the road ahead is uphill, pushing the car forward will be strenuous and speed hard to build, so it's better to turn the car around and push it downhill. Avoid push-starting in areas with heavy vehicle or pedestrian traffic to prevent accidents caused by improper driver reactions after the car starts. Before pushing the car, turn on the ignition. Once sufficient speed is reached, engage the gear, quickly release the clutch pedal, and press the accelerator. Once the engine starts, immediately depress the clutch pedal and control the throttle to prevent stalling, then slowly bring the car to a stop.
