Can You Still Drive After Engine Knocking Occurs?

You should not drive after engine knocking occurs, as it may lead to sudden seizure, damage to the crankshaft and connecting rods, and reduced engine lifespan. Engine knocking is a serious issue that requires immediate repair. Engine knocking refers to the abnormal noise produced when the piston swings inside the cylinder during the start of the working stroke or upward movement, causing the piston head or skirt to collide with the cylinder wall. Causes of engine knocking: 1. Severe knocking noise during cold starts that lessens after warming up, often due to excessive piston clearance or piston deformation. 2. Normal operation when cold but knocking occurs during acceleration when hot. As engine temperature rises, combustion speed increases. If ignition timing is too advanced, peak cylinder pressure occurs prematurely, increasing the force against the cylinder wall and resulting in knocking noises.
