Can You Start the Car in Reverse Gear?

You cannot start the car in reverse gear. The correct method for starting in reverse with a manual transmission: Press the vehicle's clutch pedal, shift into reverse gear, check the vehicle's rearview camera and mirrors to ensure safety, then partially release the clutch while pressing the brake pedal to begin reversing. Important notes: Do not reverse too quickly, always carefully monitor the surroundings during reversing, ensure all vehicle equipment is functioning properly before starting, and momentarily hold the clutch pedal while releasing the handbrake lever while applying slightly more throttle to prevent vehicle shudder.
Technically, starting in reverse gear is indeed possible. With a manual transmission, you can press the clutch, shift into reverse, release the clutch, and apply throttle to move backward directly. For an automatic transmission, simply shift to the R gear to start reversing. However, this practice is extremely dangerous! Inside the car, your focus is primarily on the dashboard and the road ahead. Starting in reverse makes you overlook blind spots behind, increasing the risk of hitting pedestrians or objects. I believe especially on slippery surfaces or uphill slopes, poor control can easily lead to skidding or sliding. Safety first—I always recommend starting normally: shift into first gear, drive a short distance, adjust your direction, and then reverse. Developing this habit while driving can reduce accidents, and novice drivers should especially avoid trying reverse starts. Reverse gear should only be used for short-distance backing when parking, avoiding long-term reverse starts that could damage the car or cause trouble.
