Can You Shift to First Gear When Driving Down a Steep Slope?

Driving down a steep slope can be done in first gear. Reasons for shifting to first gear when driving down a steep slope: When descending long and steep slopes, relying solely on the braking system to slow down may cause the brakes to overheat and fail, which is very dangerous. By shifting to a lower gear while going downhill, you can utilize engine braking to reduce speed, thereby lessening the burden on the braking system. Gear selection under different conditions: When driving up or down elevated roads, even if the slope is steep, maintaining a speed of at least 40 km/h allows the use of 4th or 5th gear. However, starting on a slope requires first gear in combination with the handbrake. For general slopes (around 15 degrees), second gear is sufficient. Steep slopes (commonly found in underground parking lots) require first gear. On slopes steeper than 30 degrees, avoid fully releasing the throttle, as smaller-displacement engines are prone to stalling. When turning on steep slopes, apply more throttle to counteract the increased resistance and prevent stalling.
