Can You Shift Gears Without Pulling the Clutch on a Slipper Clutch?

Motorcycles with slipper clutches cannot shift gears without pulling the clutch. It mainly depends on the current vehicle condition. If upshifting, you can shift gears by controlling the throttle alone. However, when downshifting, you must use the clutch; otherwise, at best, you will experience noticeable jerking, and at worst, gear grinding may occur. Therefore, the operation method varies depending on the driving conditions. A slipper clutch (Assist&Slipper-clutch), also known as a back-torque limiter clutch, is referred to as a "slipper clutch." It is not an essential component of a motorcycle and often exists as an optional or upgraded part, becoming increasingly common in modern motorcycles. It is generally considered a feature of high-end models. Currently, many mid-to-high-end domestic motorcycles come standard with slipper clutches. The method for using a slipper clutch is to press the clutch and shift to the corresponding gear, engaging first gear when starting. The main purpose of installing a slipper clutch is to avoid the negative effects of "engine braking," eliminating wheel chatter or hopping during emergency braking and downshifting, thereby maintaining driving stability.
