Can You Ride a Motorcycle with a C1 Driver's License?

You cannot ride a motorcycle with a C1 driver's license. According to relevant regulations, the C1 license is designated for small vehicles, specifically small and micro passenger cars, as well as light and micro cargo vehicles. Motorcycle operation requires either an E or D license. Riding a motorcycle with a C1 license constitutes driving beyond the permitted scope. Motorcycle licenses include D, E, and F categories, with the following permitted vehicle types: 1. D: ordinary three-wheeled motorcycles and E; 2. E: ordinary two-wheeled motorcycles and F; 3. F: light motorcycles with an engine displacement of ≤50ml and a maximum design speed of ≤50 km/h. If the driver holds a C1 license, they must wait at least one year (after the probationary period) before applying for a motorcycle license upgrade.
When I first got my C1 driver's license, I was also curious if I could ride a motorcycle since it's more flexible and convenient. After checking the traffic laws, I learned that C1 only covers small passenger vehicles and light trucks, while motorcycles require a D license or other specialized license. The law clearly states that riding a motorcycle without the proper license can result in a 12-point deduction, fines up to 2000 yuan, and even detention in serious cases. A friend of mine tried it before and got heavily fined, which also affected their insurance. I suggest you don’t take the risk—motorcycle riding skills and road tests are separate, so safety first. Go to a driving school to inquire about the D license exam. Make it a habit to learn more about traffic rules to be responsible for yourself and others, so you don’t suffer major consequences from an accident.
