Can You Drive with Engine Oil at the Lower Limit?

Engine oil at the lower limit is still drivable. When the oil level reaches the lower mark on the dipstick, it only indicates that the engine oil quantity has reached the minimum allowable level, not that there is no oil left. Typically, there is about one liter of capacity between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick. Even at the lower limit, the lubrication function of the oil remains sufficient, but it is advisable to add oil as soon as possible. The functions of engine oil are as follows: Lubrication: There is rapid relative sliding between the piston and cylinder, as well as between the main shaft and bearing. To prevent excessive wear of parts, an oil film needs to be established between the two sliding surfaces. A sufficiently thick oil film separates the surfaces of the relatively sliding parts, thereby reducing wear. Auxiliary Cooling: Engine oil has a relatively low specific heat capacity and, being inside the engine, does not inherently have a cooling effect. However, during engine operation, heat is generated by fuel combustion. The oil can carry this heat back to the oil pan, where it is dissipated into the air, assisting the radiator in cooling the engine. The actual cooling is performed by the water outside the engine casing.
As a veteran driver with over a decade of experience, I know how dangerous it is when the engine oil level drops below the minimum mark. The engine relies entirely on oil for lubrication and cooling. Insufficient oil leads to drastically increased friction, overheating components, and potential seizure. I once saw a friend push his car for a short distance with low oil, only to have the engine seize halfway, costing tens of thousands in repairs. My advice: never take the risk. If you notice the oil level is too low, stop immediately and check. Add the same type of oil if possible; otherwise, call for a tow truck. Develop a habit of regular checks—when the engine is cold and parked, pull out the dipstick to ensure the level stays between min and max. Oil changes are cheap compared to engine repairs. Safety first—don’t drive out to save time or cut corners.
